Tutoring Services was implemented in the fall of 2000, filling a need on campus for low-cost tutoring for general education courses. Today, Tutoring Services continues to offer high-quality tutoring at predetermined times for specific courses. All groups meet three hours per week–1 1/2 hours, two days a week in a classroom or residence hall. The tutors are KU students who have met grade requirements and who have been recommended by instructors.
Small groups of three to four tutees per tutor provide an excellent learning environment that may be less intimidating for many students than asking questions in a large class or lecture setting. Tutor groups are set up like structured study groups; the tutor is a peer expert–a student who can truly empathize with other students' classroom experiences. Tutors will NOT check homework; they will break down problems, clarify, discuss, explain and show... this is a highly interactive learning experience. Students will be encouraged to problem-solve and become self-directed learners.
